A surgical checklist is known to lower patient death
rates.
Developed by the World Health Organization (WHO), the
surgical safety checklist is being used by over 100,000 hospitals. The list
contains 19 items that can be check marked before and after a procedure.
In a 2009 study consisting of eight hospitals in
different countries, it was found that the overall death rate among surgery
patients dropped from 1.5 percent to 0.8 percent in a year after the centers
adopted the checklist.
